Program Name:

Kohl's Trauma Related Injury Prevention Program (TRIP)

Program Summary:

The Kohl's Trauma Related Injury Prevention Program (TRIP) partners with local schools, fire, police, EMS and insurance agencies to present injury prevention programs to children and parents at schools and community programs/activities throughout the Detroit metro area. We provide safety tools (helmets, car seats, smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, fire extinguishers, escape ladders, etc.) to carry out the prevention they have been taught. We consult with families of children with special health care needs to determine what the specialized safety needs are for their child and then work to provide for those needs. Child passenger safety training, safe sleep and helmet fitting are provided for other injury prevention advocates in the state.

Success measurements of the overall program and its reach into your community:

We measure the success of the Kohl's TRIP by assessing knowledge gained by having participants (children and adults) do pre- and post-tests. The test results demonstrate that there is an increase in knowledge at every educational event. Before and after many educational events, we perform site surveillance to determine if the children/adults have had a behavior change. The percent of behavior change has increased in every instance that site surveillance has been performed. By using a mapping technique and injury registries, we are able to determine in some areas that we have actually decreased the number of injuries that our children suffer.

To measure the success of the program's reach to the community, we look at the demand for the program. The program has grown from three schools in 2001 to 461 programs in 2008. The major growth is from word of mouth, which in itself represents a success. Only schools/agencies pleased with the program would recommend it to someone else. Also, we get many requests to present the Kohl's TRIP Program both locally and internationally. Injury prevention professionals are interested in how we developed our program and how we can do the large amount of teaching that we do.

Successful tactics for making our program known in our community:

  • Word of mouth from the current community programs we are doing. We are in the community (locally and internationally) 461 times a year teaching and educating families and professionals how to keep children safe. We have grown from three schools the first year of teaching to 461 different programs.
  • The four Kohl's TRIP Program vehicles are on the road daily and we receive calls from interested parties who have seen the vehicles. They ask about the programs, how Kohl's is involved and how they can get the program for their children. The vehicles are basically rolling billboards that carry our message.
  • The media (both paid and unpaid) that we do each year not only helps to reach and teach the public but also relays a message about what can happen when partners join together to make a difference. Whenever a media message is made, our phone number is given and we get calls from the community asked about safety practices, how to problem solve a particular situation and even requesting to come out and teach.
  • Just saying "Yes". Being available to whoever needs help and to put together whatever resource they need has put us in the position as the main injury prevention resource in the Metro Detroit area. Competing hospitals call upon us for assistance and want to partner with us.
