Program Name:

Kohl's & St. Mary's Keeps Kids' Safe Program

Program Summary:

The Kohl's & St. Mary's Keep Kids' Safe program seeks to prevent the thousands of childhood injuries that occur every year by providing education about bicycle, ATV and car seat safety to parents and children within the community.

The program has three components:

  • Public Service Announcements on ATV Safety Awareness: We created an ATV Safety Awareness PSA using children of a hospital employee and one of our local Kohl's managers as the actors as well as our LifeFlight helicopter and local ambulance. The PSA was submitted to all of our local stations to add to their rotation and it has been airing since April. There was also a paid schedule for a cable network.
  • Through the Kohl's & St. Mary's Keep Kids Safe "Think" Program, a helmet safety program, we conduct presentations at local schools for first through third graders that include a LifeFlight nurse demonstrating the consequences of not wearing a helmet, how to wear a helmet and the different types of helmets. This is done through a slideshow, telling about a real life scenario and doing a demonstration smashing a melon with and without a helmet. Also, a follow up survey is sent home with the students asking if they have a helmet -- if they do not, Kohl's & St. Mary's will provide one for them.
  • Safety Celebration Event: This event includes a car seat clinic, bike helmet giveaway and fittings, fingerprinting, DNA kits, our Mobile Dental Clinic, Clowns, Inflatables, LifeFlight helicopter, ATV Safety booth, dance performances & our check presentation. The event is held in the Kohl's parking lot, we check approximately 40 car seats, replace 16 and give away more than 300 bike helmets. Prior to the event, all elementary schools receive safety coloring contest sheets and event fliers to send home with the students, and at the event, we present the awards to the coloring contest winners.

Successful tactics for making our program known in our community:

  • Paid media (radio and print) is definitely the most successful way to get the word out about the program.
  • Making flyers available to all of our employed physician offices and sending them to our school corporation to send home with the children made a big impact.
  • Press releases are another great way to let the community know what is going on – and they are free!
