A: Kohl’s Associates in Action program supports youth-serving, ages birth to 18 years, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations (or breast cancer-focused 501(c)(3) nonprofits in Wisconsin).
Q: How do I know if my organization is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit?
A: Although an organization may be considered tax-exempt or a nonprofit, it may not have charitable 501(c)(3) status. If your organization has 501(c)(3) status, you will have a Letter of Determination from the IRS confirming this status. If you are unsure of your organization’s status, please follow up with the IRS directly.
Q: My organization’s 501(c)(3) status is pending or revoked. Do I qualify for an Associates in Action grant?
A: No. Kohl’s supports organizations with a current 501(c)(3) status.
Q: What if my organization requires a background check to volunteer?
A: As the Associates in Action program is volunteer-based, it is at the Associates’ discretion whether to submit to a background check. Please know that if Associates do not consent, the nonprofit may not reach the minimum number of Associate volunteers to qualify for a grant.
Q: What are the qualifications to receive an Associates in Action $500 grant?
- A minimum of five Kohl's Associates from one Kohl’s location must volunteer for a minimum of three consecutive hours in one day
- The activity must benefit a qualifying youth-serving, ages birth to 18 years, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization (or breast cancer-focused 501(c)(3) nonprofits in Wisconsin)
- Funds must be used to directly support youth, ages birth to 18 years, community-wide
Q: If I get more than five Associates to volunteer at my event, can I earn additional grants?
A: No. Whether there are five or 105 Associates volunteering from one Kohl’s location, the grant amount remains $500. Additional grants are only awarded if multiple locations participate at the event and meet criteria.
Q: What if five Associates don't show up, assuming all other criteria is met? Can I still get the grant?
A: No. There must be a minimum of five Associates from one Kohl’s location volunteering for three consecutive hours in one day.

Q: If I cancel the event, does my organization still qualify for the Associates in Action grant even if the event didn’t take place?
A: No. If the event did not take place, the organization will not be eligible for an Associates in Action grant. If the event is not being rescheduled, it should be canceled in the Grant Management System. Nonprofits should work with the event captain at the Kohl's location to cancel the event in the system.
Q: Can I use Kohl’s name and/or logo to promote my event?
A: No. While we appreciate your organization wanting to recognize Kohl’s, as part of our company policy, use of Kohl's, Kohl's Cares and Associates in Action name and/or logo is not permitted. In lieu of using Kohl’s name and/or logo to promote your event, please allow our Associates to wear their Associates in Action t-shirts at the event. In addition, we encourage your organization to submit photos and stories of your event through the Grant Management System.
Q: Can I provide gifts to volunteers?
A: No. While we appreciate your organization’s consideration, we are unable to accept any gifts as a result of our volunteer efforts.
