Kohl’s Fitness Blitz
Beginning September 2006, a new way to motivate kids to better health began in South Bend, Indiana with the implementation of “Kohl’s Fitness Blitz”, Kohl’s funded program developed by HealthWorks! Kids’ Museum.
HealthWorks! was created by Memorial Children’s Hospital over 7 years ago as one of Memorial’s innovative answers to improving the health of the community. The three-part program “Fitness Blitz” helps children of all ages to get fit while having a great time. “Jump, Bounce & Groove” gives
participants information on fitness while encouraging movement through crazy music and activity. “Life of a Carrot” takes children through a lively understanding of nutrition and healthy eating, while “Move It” takes it all on the road with a 20-minute fitness workout that will have everyone feeling energetic!
With the financial support of Kohl’s and the assistance of their many store associates, kids in South Bend are having fun and getting fit!

Kohl’s Bicycle Rodeos
This summer, hundreds of children will learn the skills they need to stay safe while riding their bicycles, thanks to Kohl’s Department Stores and the Kohl’s Cares for Kids program. A series of Bicycle Rodeos will be held at area Kohl’s Stores and children will be outfitted for free bike helmets, learn how to safely navigate around cars, driveways, through intersections and road hazards like rocks and surface changes.
Rachel (7) and Emily (6) Mathews were able to attend a Bicycle Rodeo last summer at Kohl’s Northeast store in Fort Wayne. “Not only did the girls enjoy the rodeo, but they learned a lot about how they should ride their bikes and what they should look out for,” said Brenda Mathews, “they stayed safe on their bikes all summer.”
Last year, over 300 area children received free bike helmets and learned valuable safety tips through the Kohl’s Bicycle Rodeo program.

Kohl’s WILD Kids Project
Through the Kohl’s WILD Kids Project in 2006, Robert, a second grader, has participated in health and wellness fitness events with the Neighborhood Centers of Johnson County youth programs.
With staff support, Robert has collected personal health and wellness data including BMI, shoulder
stretches and push-up counts. Based on this data, Robert and staff have developed a personal fitness and nutrition plan so that he is able to reach target levels and feel healthier. Robert’s whole family has
benefited from his participation in the Kohl’s WILD Kids Project. Both his mother and older sister suffer from extreme obesity and struggle with many daily living tasks.
This summer, 150 Kohl’s employees worked side
by side with West Garfield Park neighbors to build the first of these playgrounds. “We have waited more than 15 years to see kids laugh and play on a playground in our neighborhood,” said Lilly Jacquette, a mother and grandmother of four. “I know it will make a big difference for our kids.”
Through Robert’s ongoing involvement in the program, his mother and sister have become active participants in the teen and adult walking clubs. They use pedometers to measure the steps they walk each day. Both mother and daughter are working toward their goal of 10,000 steps each day, and creating a more healthy life for them and Robert.
