April 30, 2004 More Than 3,500 Kohl's Associates Nationwide to Volunteer
More Than 10,000 Hours to Commemorate Day of Community Service MENOMONEE FALLS, Wis., April 30, 2004 More than 3,500 Kohl's Department Stores associates will volunteer more than 10,000 hours in their communities in support of Join Hands Day 2004. Join Hands Day is Saturday, May 1. The national day of volunteerism encourages adults and young people to work together to improve the community through service. For the second straight year, thousands of associates from Kohl's corporate headquarters in Menomonee Falls, Wis., its distribution centers, district offices and stores from coast to coast, will participate in events to support their communities. More than 330 Kohl's stores will participate in Join Hands Day events this year. Gathering at locations across the country, Kohl's associates, working together with local organizations, including Big Brothers Big Sisters and Boys & Girls Clubs, will volunteer to support children's hospitals and other youth serving organizations. Adults and kids will join together throughout the day for activities - that will vary by community - including indoor and outdoor events, games and arts and crafts. In Kohl's hometown of Milwaukee, for example, more than 200 associates will work with kids from the local chapter of Big Brothers Big Sisters to create gifts for young patients at the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. This is the fifth annual Join Hands Day, and the second in which Kohl's has participated. To find out more Join Hands Day events across the country or to join a volunteer effort, visit www.joinhandsday.org. "We are proud to partner with these wonderful youth service organizations to help support kids across the country," said Julie Gardner, Kohl's senior vice president of marketing. "Kohl's associates have always been very generous with volunteering in their communities, and by participating in Join Hands Day, we are demonstrating in a big way our commitment to improving health and education opportunities for children." "Big Brothers Big Sisters is delighted to partner with Kohl's to join hands across the country," said India McCanse, president and CEO, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Milwaukee. "In Milwaukee alone there are 600 children waiting for a big brother or a big sister. Events like these create awareness for the program and the opportunity to serve more kids." About Kohl's Department Stores Kohl's commitment to children's hospitals across the country is made possible through the Kohl's Cares for Kids program, which raises funds for children's hospitals through the sale of special gift items. Four times per year, Kohl's features special items in its stores priced at $5 each with 100 percent of the net profits donated to children's hospitals. The Kohl's Cares for Kids program also includes Kohl's Kids Who Care, an annual youth volunteer recognition program, fundraising gift cards for local schools and non-profit youth groups, as well as an associate program to encourage volunteerism. About Big Brothers Big Sisters In 2003, Forbes magazine placed Big Brothers Big Sisters on its Gold-Star list of the top 10 charities for its excellence in efficiency and effectiveness. The national headquarters is located in Philadelphia, Pa. For additional information or to volunteer, visit www.bigbrothersbigsisters.org. ### Public Relations Contact: |
