YOUTH VOLUNTEERS RECEIVE $1,000 SCHOLARSHIPS FROM KOHL'S
MENOMONEE FALLS, Wis., July 8, 2003 Kohl's
Department Stores today named 94 regional Kohl's Kids Who Care®
winners, rewarding young people across the country for their outstanding
volunteer efforts.
The Kohl's Kids Who Care® volunteer recognition
program recognizes the efforts of young people who contribute in
special ways to their local communities. Kohl's created the program
in 2001 to reward youth for their outstanding volunteer efforts
and to encourage others to follow their lead.
The 94 regional winners from across the country
were selected from a pool of 883 store-level winners in two age
categories, 6-11 and 12-18 (at the nomination deadline). Each regional
winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship for post-secondary education
and become eligible to receive one of 10 national $5,000 scholarships.
The store-level winners, chosen from more than 7,300 nominations,
received a $50 Kohl's gift card. Winners were identified on the
basis of initiative, leadership, creativity and generosity.
From volunteering in soup kitchens to tutoring
to organizing local fundraisers, young people across the country
are making a positive difference in their communities.
"Each year, we receive thousands of nominations
that tell the heartwarming stories of some amazing kids," said
Julie Gardner, Kohl's senior vice president of marketing. "The
94 regional winners are just some of the many incredible examples
of young people making a difference in their communities. We are
extremely proud of their achievements and thrilled to be able to
recognize and reward their contributions."
The 10 national winners will be announced in August
of this year. In addition to rewarding national winners with the
$5,000 post-secondary education scholarship, Kohl's will contribute
$1,000 to a non-profit organization on behalf of each national winner.
Kohl's Kids Who Care® is part of the company's
Kohl's Cares for Kids® program, which raises funds for children's
hospitals, features fundraising gift cards for local schools and
non-profit youth groups and provides an employee program to encourage
volunteerism.
